Spelling & grammar

Free spelling and grammar checking as you type, with a dictionary you control.

The Proofreading panel checks your spelling and grammar as you type, and underlines what it finds right in the editor. It runs on your device, costs no credits, and never rewrites your prose — it points at what it finds and, where it can, suggests a correction for you to apply yourself.

What it does not do

It flags and suggests; it never changes your words. Spelling, grammar, and style are separate toggles — turn any off if you would rather not see it. Style is off by default.

How to use it

  • Open the Proofreading panel from the editor toolbar. Spelling and grammar are on by default and update a moment after you stop typing.
  • Flagged words are underlined in the editor: red for spelling, and a coloured wavy line for grammar and style. The full list, with suggestions, is in the panel.
  • Stylean optional layer that flags wordiness and readability. It is off by default — turn it on in the panel if you want it.
  • To apply a suggestion, make the edit yourself — the panel shows the flagged text and the suggested correction.
  • Long documents are checked in the first part only; the panel says so when that happens.

Your dictionary

Character names, place names, and invented terms should not be flagged. Add any flagged word to your dictionary with the book icon on its row: to this project, or to your whole account. Words in your project’s knowledge graph (characters, locations, items) are accepted automatically.

  • This projectwords that are valid only in the project you are working in — a novel’s cast and places.
  • Your accountwords valid everywhere you write — your name, terms from your field.

Open “Dictionary” at the top of the panel to review, add, or remove words in either scope. Words seeded from your knowledge graph are marked, so you can tell them from ones you added by hand.
