Coaches

Targeted help on the text you select — consistency, character voice, and more.

Coaches give you focused, observe-and-ask help on a piece of writing. Every coach is listed on the project’s Coaches surface. The ones recommended for your content type are on by default — character and world-building coaches for fiction and TTRPG work, a citation coach for academic writing — and the rest sit under “Other coaches”, off but available. Recommendation is guidance, not a limit: switch on any coach whenever it would help. An enabled coach then runs everywhere the recommended ones do — the multi-coach pass and the editor’s review — and a recommended coach you turn off stops running.

What the coaches do

  • Coachgeneral coaching on any passage you select — observations and questions to push your thinking.
  • Consistency coachchecks the text against the rules your project has established and flags where they drift.
  • Character voice coachchecks whether a character’s dialogue and actions stay true to how you have written them.
  • Grammar and spellingfast, deterministic checks — no credits, no model calls.

Coach on selection

You do not have to leave the editor to get help. Select a passage and open coaching on it, then click Coach this passage (marked with the sparkle) to begin — opening the panel never spends a credit on its own, so nothing runs until you start it. From there the coach receives your selection, the surrounding context, and the brief, then works through it with you a turn at a time. Your conversation is saved to that passage and resumes when you come back — reopen it, or return after a reload, and you pick up where you left off without spending a credit again. Conversations tied to a review gap are saved the same way.

Choosing which coach reads a passage

The coaching panel has a coach picker at the top. It lists every coach that is on for this project, each with a one-line description of what it looks at and a link that opens it on the Coaches surface in a new tab. Pick a different coach and the panel starts a fresh conversation with that coach — nothing runs until you start it, so switching never spends a credit on its own.

Setting a default coach

Once you have picked a coach, Set default keeps it. You choose how widely it applies: this document, this project, or your whole account. The most specific setting wins — a document default overrides a project default, which overrides your account default. With nothing set, passages go to the general coach. You can also set the account default from Settings → Coaches.

Multi-coach pass

To hear from several coaches on the same passage at once, select the text and open the multi-coach pass from the editor. It lists your enabled AI coaches — pick which ones to run this time (all are selected by default), and start the pass. Each coach reads the passage on its own and returns its own observation and question in its own sub-panel, and you can follow up with each coach independently. Nobody rewrites your prose; every coach only observes and asks.

Writers Rooms

A Writers Room is a saved group of coaches you run together, so you do not have to re-tick the same line-up every time. Give it a name and a short description and pick its members. Rooms you create on your account are available in every project; rooms you create from a project’s Coaches surface belong to that project, and account rooms still show there for reference.

  • Load a roomin the multi-coach pass, pick a room and it ticks exactly its members. You can still adjust the selection by hand before you run.
  • Save a selectiontick the coaches you want, then save that selection as a new room for this project or your account.
  • Set a default roomkeep a room for this document, this project, or your account, and the pass opens with it already loaded. The most specific setting wins, exactly like the default coach.

A Writers Room in the full editorial pass

The full editorial pass runs the Editor across your whole draft as it always has. You can also point it at a Writers Room: the Editor still runs and consolidates, and each coach in the room reads the whole draft alongside it, with their notes shown beside the Editor’s suggestions. Because that runs several passes at once it costs noticeably more, so the pass shows you the credit total and the coaches involved and waits for you to confirm before anything runs. Rooms above the size limit are not accepted for an editorial pass — trim the room and try again.

What it costs

The model-backed coaches spend a credit per turn — a multi-coach pass costs one credit per coach you run, and each follow-up is another credit for that coach. A full editorial pass costs 4 credits; adding a Writers Room charges each of its coaches on top, and the pass shows the total before you confirm. Grammar and spelling are free.
